[310712.EN.SEA] Maersk : Key Performance Indicators Saved Firm US$90 Million Over 3 Years

DANISH shipping giant Maersk Line says it has saved nearly US$90 million in energy spending over three years through course corrections formulated from the use of Key Performance Indicators (KPI).

The world biggest shipping line said it has achieved the savings in energy costs by measuring the performance of individual vessels and raising awareness on fuel consumption.

Maersk KPIs have been used for years to enhance internal corporate functions, and in 2009 they were first applied to vessel operations, reports Digital Ship magazine.

Vessel KPIs have evolved through close cooperation between the ships, Maersk Line Vessel Management and Maersk Maritime Technology, which are in charge of the Maersk Ship Performance System (MSPS).

After implementation of the programme by the crew and fleet groups, the company has been able to pinpoint some of the savings made over the last three years. For example, Maersk Line notes that 160,000 tonnes of fuel have been saved as a result of higher propulsion efficiency, contributing to the $90 million figure, a total which does not even include savings from other energy initiatives such as trim optimisation or basic load reduction.

"If you can't measure something, you can't control it. If you can't control it, you can't improve it. It is essential to realise that the scorecards are only a valuable tool if they facilitate decision making among stakeholders," said Maersk vessel performance manager Anup Rajan.

After seeing positive initial results from the KPI process for Maersk's own fleet, more than 150 vessels were upgraded with MSPS in the second half of 2011.

"We're confident that, although we are introducing rather new standards in the industry, we will be able to drive similar performance improvements in the chartered fleet," says Flemming Bo Larsen, who head's the company's energy efficiency drive.

The company says that its largest owners of chartered vessels have now all received scorecards and benchmarks on energy, starting from January 1. Each of the KPIs will be rated on a monthly basis and merged into an overall KPI score for each charter owner. More owners will be added on an ongoing basis.

Nevertheless, we achieved above market volume growth in both segments. Our industry-specific logistics solutions positively contributed to this development," he said in a company press release.

In the sea freight division volumes increased by 8 per cent, lead by the export business from Asia to the Middle East, South America and Africa, and the company also achieved also increases in the transpacific trade lanes. In the Asia-Europe trades, volumes stagnated on the back of weak market demand. The air freight division suffered a 4 per cent decrease in market volumes compared to a year earlier. The company said it continued to focus on the expansion of its activities in special segments - most notably perishables logistics - and to provide industry-specific air freight solutions resulting in a tonnage increase of about 1 per cent year on year. However, margin pressure, start-up costs and the closure of unprofitable locations in France and other countries in Southern Europe negatively impacted the result of the business unit in the first half of 2012. The operational result was described as being "unsatisfactory" after decreasing by 15.3 per cent.

GERMANY's DHL Supply Chain has opened its "mega hub" in what is arguably the world's tallest warehouse, with a circular truck route going up 11 floors before freight lifts go up higher in the 24-storey building in Hong Kong's Tsing Yi waterfront shipping district.

Representing an investment of HK$630 million (US$77.5 million), the "DHL Supply Chain MegaHub Hong Kong" offers nearly 900,000 square feet of warehouse space.

To date, this DHL division has invested a total of HK$2.13 billion in facilities in their north Asian sub-region over the past three years, with projects for another HK$28.6 billion from now to 2015. Recent investments in the region include new warehouse facilities in China targeting the consumer sector, a multi customer site in South Korea and an expansion of their retail footprint in Japan.

"Both international and local customers require effective and efficient solutions to establish their supply chains in the region, and we are proud to open DHL Supply Chain MegaHub Hong Kong to better serve the market," said Deutsche Post DHL chief executive Frank Appel.

Located in Tsing Yi, the DHL facility offers direct access to Hong Kong's transport network close to Hong Kong airport, the city's central business district, container terminals and even mainland China, said a company statement.

DHL rented the Interlink site on a long-term lease from real estate developer Goodman, which occupies 40 per cent of the building.

Said Global DHL Supply Chain CEO Bruce Edwards: "With this new mega hub we will expand our organisational capabilities providing better service in Hong Kong and beyond by meeting needs for comprehensive solutions from a single source."

Said DHL Supply Chain Hong Kong and Macau managing director Tom Wong: "The opening in Hong Kong is a testament of our commitment to and confidence in the city as one of the world's primary logistics and distribution centre. The scale of operations ensures cost efficiencies and operational benefits for clients who require flexibility as their businesses in the region continue to adapt and develop."

The site, employing 1,000 workers, offers ramp access floors for large inbound and outbound volumes, and cargo lift floors with additional features such as temperature control and secure cages. The building's two-tier security system ensures first-class protection for customer goods and is coupled with extensive safety features to minimise fire risk.

DHL, part of Deutsche Post DHL, operates in 220 countries and territories and about 275,000 employees and generated revenues of US$65 billion in 2011.
