THE recent incident in which 83
containers fell overboard off a Yang Ming containership in adverse
weather conditions has sparked an investigation by the Australian Transport Safety
Bureau (ATSB).
A further 30 containers on deck
were damaged while the 4,250 TEU YM Efficiency was en route from Kaohsiung
to Sydney.
According to the ATSB, which is in
the evidence-gathering phase of its probe, the rough weather caused the vessel
to roll and pitch heavily, "resulting in substantial movement of the cargo
containers" on board, but the vessel itself did not sustain any
significant damage, reported American Shipper.
As part of its investigation, the
ATSB said it will "obtain information and recordings from the ship,
company and pilots, and will interview directly involved parties as
appropriate," adding that if the bureau identifies a "critical safety
issue relevant parties will be immediately notified so that appropriate safety
action can be taken."
The ship's operator Yang Ming said
that none
of the containers contained dangerous goods or marine fuel pollutants.
The YM Efficiency is deployed on Yang
Ming's joint Asia-Australia CAT service with TS Lines and
Evergreen Line, according to BlueWater Reporting.
