COSCO
Shipping Specialised Carriers (CSSC) has launched China's biggest semi-submersible
ship, the Xin Guang Hua, from Guangzhou Shipyard International Company.
The
Xin Guang Hua is 255 metre long and 68 metres wide and can handle 100,000
tonnes of cargo, and is now one of eight company semi-submersibles,
ranging from 20,000 - 100,000 tonnes carrying capacity, reports Xinhua.
Semi-submersible
ships are mainly used to transport large cargo, such as offshore platforms for
the oil and gas industry, and can also be used to move entire ships for
salvage.
One
was used to move USS Cole back to a US for repairs after the American destroyer
was disabled in 2000 by an al-Qaeda bomb in Aden.
