THE Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) will receive
between 2009 and 2016 new containerships with a total capacity of 473,000 TEU
that it will either own or assign to long-term charters, following a recent
slew of orders, making its orderbook the world's biggest.
The new capacity comprises including 97,000 TEU that has
already been delivered and 376,000 TEU that is slated for delivery over the
next three years, reports Alphaliner.
This comes as MSC's finances have been boosted by the
sale of a 35 per cent stake in its terminal investment arm for US$1.93 billion
at the end of May.
According to the report there is no lack of financiers to
fund MSC's new vessel acquisitions. CIMC FL (HK), a wholly-owned subsidiary of
China International Marine Containers (CIMC) on Shenzhen, ordered five
neo-panamax wide-beam 8,800 TEU ships from the New Times Shipyard for $85
million each with the backing of 17-year charters by MSC at a daily rate of
$25,000. The vessels are due for delivery in 2015.
The deal contains purchase obligation on expiry of the
charter for $21.5 million, and follows closely behind an order placed three
weeks earlier by CIMC for seven identical vessels from Dalian Shipbuilding
(DSIC).
In June the Bank of Communications (BoCom) of China
ordered six 9,400-TEU vessels from Jiangnan Changxing (four units) and Hudong
Zhonghua (two units) on behalf of MSC.
The report said MSC is also linked to an additional order
for ten 8,800 TEU ships placed by SinOceanic in May, however, the vessels are
not included in MSC's orderbooks and charter arrangements have not yet been
confirmed.
Furthermore, MSC is also linked to an order placed by
Asian owners in early July for three 18,000 TEU containerships to be built by
Daewoo (DSME).
Alphaliner predicts that MSC's total operated capacity
could hit 2.75 million TEU by the end of 2016 (assuming neutral moves on the
current fleet) and just behind world leader Maersk's current fleet and
orderbook that totals 2.97 million TEU.
