AS part of a commemoration event to
honour the contribution made by the Tanjong Pagar Terminal to Singapore's economic
growth, PSA has earned a Guinness World Records' title for
the creating the biggest shipping container image.
Located in the heart of the Tanjong
Pagar Terminal, the feat involved 359 shipping containers forming the shape of
Singapore's lion head symbol. The formation is visible from both the air and
the central business district.
Taking 15 hours to complete, the lion
head symbolises courage, strength and excellence, and was completed with
support from a diverse array of shipping line customers, working together with
PSA.
The record-setting feat was created as
part of the PSA event "honouring our heritage, celebrating our
future," to celebrate the contributions of Singapore's first container
terminal, from its humble beginnings at the crossroads of east-west maritime
trade to the key part it has played in the growth of Singapore's container
port.
Attended by Singapore's Coordinating Minister
for Infrastructure & Minister for Transport, Khaw Boon Wan, the
event included an official presentation of the Guinness World Records
certificate and a 2.8 kilometre walkabout for staff and guests around the
terminal facility.
Officially opened in 1972, Tanjong
Pagar Terminal
was the first container terminal in Southeast Asia to receive a containership,
the MV
Nihon. Since then, and with the advent of larger vessels requiring
deeper berths, PSA has begun the process of moving from this pioneering
facility to the newer Pasir Panjang, where operations will
continue for at least another 20 years.
These developments are part of PSA's
long-term plans to eventually consolidate container port activities at the Tuas
Terminal that is currently being developed.
"With the rapid completion of our
new terminals at Pasir Panjang, and the development of our future Tuas Terminal
ongoing, PSA remains future-ready and committed to maintaining the strong
economic contribution of our terminals, as one of the foremost container
transshipment hubs in the world," said PSA International chairman Fock
Siew.
