JAPANESE shipping giant "NYK" has been selected as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World (the Global 100) for the fourth year running along with 100 companies picked from 3,000 candidate corporations within 23 countries.
The companies selected including five Japanese companies, one each from the automobile, insurance, precision equipment, services, and maritime transport industry. NYK was ranked 19th among all candidates and second among Japanese companies.
Launched in 2005, the Global 100 was compiled through 2009 by Canada-based media company Corporate Knights and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors. During that time, the list was determined by analysing extra-financial drivers of risk and shareholder value, including companies' performance on social, environmental, and strategic governance issues.
For the 2010 list, Corporate Knights collaborated with three new partners and made use of the following key evaluation indicators including sales per unit consumption/emission amount of energy, CO2, water, and waste; existence of sustainability committee, and directors' participation in the committee; ratio of CEO's compensation to average employee compensation and level of compliance to Global Reporting Initiative or GRI guidelines.
Encouraged by its inclusion in the 2010 Global 100, the NYK Group will strive to further promote its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activities.
