[EN-LOG] BIFA Tells Hung Parliament Not To Forget Freight issue
THE new British Prime Minister must ensure that the trade facilitation and international transport needs of UK businesses are given "priority in difficult funding decisions to come," said Peter Quantrill, director general of the British International Freight Association (BIFA).
"Whatever the eventual shape of the government, thinking is still needed on issues facing those in facilitating import and export traffic," said Mr Quantrill in a BIFA statement.
"The new government must not neglect those issues that impact on the global supply chain, such as security, customs, EU legislation and international trade treaties.
Whilst it must meet important objectives in a coordinated and balanced manner, it should be done without creating barriers to trade," he said.
"There must be greater focus on freight transport in Westminster and government must help our members to develop more effective ways to manage international supply chains," he said.
"The state of the UK road infrastructure must be at the forefront of government thinking. Congestion needs to be planned out of all modes of UK transport.
UK ports and harbours require stronger support and better strategic thinking than was shown recently in the National Policy Statement for Ports," he added.
BIFA represents over 1,400 freight forwarding and logistics companies in the UK.
