NOL chief executive Ron Widdows, also chairman of the Transpacific Stabilisation Agreement (TSA) and the Westbound Transpacific Agreement (WTSA) advised the industry to show more transparency following APL's decision to publish service reliability data.
"If we're smart, we can make better decisions, and that has to be better not just for our industry but the economy of the United States," he said after receiving the Containerisation & Intermodal Institute's Connie Award along with SSA Marine CEO Jon Hemingway.
Mr Widdows comments at an industry dinner, highlighted the ongoing forums for shippers to discuss contracts, surcharges and services and the creation of advisory councils for the
conference agreements which comprises of 15 shipper advisories that meet face-to-face rather than previously in conference calls.
The advisory council meetings of which WTSA first was held in Seattle a fortnight ago with TSA to follow are to be retained on a quarterly basis. Mr Widdows said that government mandates on advisory councils is not necessary.
"We have the ability to do this already without being told," he said, adding that giving information readily rather than kept as a secret from shippers is essential.
