[131010.EN.LAN] British Truckers Blast Proposed EU Four-Metre Height Limit

THE Road Haulage Association (RHA) in the UK has slammed a European Commission proposal to limit trailer heights to four metres, claiming it would threaten the efficiency of the UK road haulage industry.

The association also said height limits would increase carbon emissions and congestion on roads and undermine the large investments by members and UK trailer manufacturers, reports London's International Freighting Weekly.

"Brussels proposes to limit the height of lorries to four metres, part of a process of making every [member] country do exactly the same, regardless of its circumstances," said RHA policy director Jack Semple.

"The draft proposal has emerged from nowhere, aimed at simplifying the rules and improving vehicle standards, late in a process that has been ongoing for several years.

"We couldn't quite believe it when we saw it in a confidential draft a few weeks ago. Perhaps the EC didn't realise the implications of its proposals, but there are worrying signs that it may have known exactly what it was doing all along," he said.

"We are seeking further clarifications from Brussels. But if they intend to pursue this idea, which is completely unjustified, uncosted and unacceptable, we will oppose it as strongly as we can, and we will be calling on the UK coalition government to do the same," said Mr Semple.
