[111110.EN.SEA] Throughput Begins to Slow for Winter Slack Season, But 2010 Still a Good Year

VOLUMES at global container ports will rise year on year in 2010, but latest figures suggest that the stellar growth witnessed earlier in the year is now beginning to lose momentum in the fourth quarter.

According to information provided to The Container Shipping Manager, global container volumes reached their peak in August and have been slowing since September, slightly earlier than the traditional winter slack season.

In China, the top 10 Chinese ports, after seeing an energetic double-digit growth of 20.7 per cent year on year for the first nine months of 2010, experienced a slight downturn in September.

Our sister publication, the Hong Kong Shipping Gazette, recently reported that these ports handled a total of 12.3 million TEU in September, representing a decline of three per cent compared with August’s peak of 13.1 million TEU...

All Chinese ports, excluding Dalian and Tianjin, witnessed a month-on-month decline for the month of September.

Shanghai, the largest container port in the world, reported a decline in September of 3.8 per cent from August to 2.53 million TEU. However, throughput for the nine-month period from January to September 2010 saw volumes rise 18.5 per cent year on year to 21.6 million TEU, said Paris-based maritime agency, Alphaliner.

Shenzhen posted similar results with volumes for the first nine months of the year rising 28.4 per cent, while September throughput was down 7.1 per cent month on month to 2.07 million TEU.

The world’s number two port, in terms of volumes handled, Singapore, has been in decline since reaching its peak in July. The Southeast Asian transhipment hub handled 2.24 million TEU in September, down 7.9 per cent month on month, and 11 per cent down from July, said Alphaliner.

Hong Kong, which is expected to lose ground to Shenzhen going forward into the new year, handled 1.94 million TEU for the month, marking a seven per cent decline from August.
