ABU Dhabi Ports and Etihad Rail have struck a deal to link Khalifa port to the emerging
national railway network by building a new 2.4 million-TEU-capacity rail
terminal at the port.
Abu Dhabi Ports is optimistic that
the partnership will generate time and cost savings for customers. The port''s
total handling capacity will increase to 9.1 million TEU per annum over the next five
years and the rail link will reduce the amount of container traffic
moving to and from the port by road, reported The Maritime Standard of Dubai.
As the result of the planned
investment, the Etihad Rail network will extend 605 kilometres from Ghuwaifat on the
UAE's border with Saudi Arabia to Fujairah on the east coast and will
pass through Khalifa port, Jebel Ali and Khor Fakkan.
Phase one of the project, which includes 264 km of
railway line, was delivered and
became fully operational in 2016 and connects the Shah and Habshan gas fields
in the Al Dhafra region of Abu Dhabi to the port of Ruwais on the Arabian Gulf.
This line has the capacity to move 22,000 tonnes of sulphur granules daily.
