FOR the fifth consecutive year, Japanese shipping giant NYK has been selected as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the World in the Global 100 selection.
The 2010 Global 100 was announced at the recent World Economic Forum annual meeting in Davos, Switzerland. Of the 3,000 corporate candidates from 22 countries, 100 were selected, including 19 Japanese companies.
Launched in 2005, the Global 100 was compiled through 2009 by Corporate Knights and Innovest Strategic Value Advisors. During that time, analysing extra-financial drivers of risk and shareholder value, including companies' performance on social, environmental, and strategic governance issues, determined the list. Since the 2010 list, Corporate Knights has collaborated with three partners.
Judging made use of the following standards: Sales per unit consumption/emission amount of energy, CO2, water, and waste, ratio of CEO's compensation to average employee compensation, relevance between directors' compensations and the degree of contribution to social sustainability, ratio of female board directors, level of compliance to Global Reporting Initiative or GRI guidelines, rate of sales to research and development costs, etc.
Encouraged by its inclusion in the 2011 Global 100, NYK, as a good corporate citizen, will continue to take an active role in social issues, including the conservation of the environment, to contribute to the achievement of a better global society.
Corporate Knights was founded in 2002 in Toronto as an independent Canada-based media company that publishes the world's largest circulation magazine explicitly focused on corporate responsibility. Corporate Knights also publishes the annual Best 50 Corporate Citizens.
Three partners are Inflection Point Capital Management, an investment consulting company focusing on corporate sustainability; Global Currents Investment Management, a US investment advisor; Phoenix Global Advisors LLC: a consulting company that evaluates environment, society and governance (ESG), and financial factors.
