DAMCO, the wholly owned AP Moller-Maersk's standalone logistics unit, is to provide customers with an online calculation of carbon dioxide emissions at an browser-based interface of "myDamco" to track all products shipped by ocean and air.
"Experience shows that greening your supply chain can reduce logistics costs and emissions from your inbound supply chain by up to 15 per cent. Online visibility of carbon emissions will enable you to take earlier corrective action if operations is not in sync with your carbon reduction and efficiency goals," said Damco's global head of supply chain development Erling Johns Nielsen.
Every single shipment can be measured with track and trace functionality, said a company statement. A customer can, for instance, quickly evaluate emissions from an air freight shipment, or form an overview of top 10 emissions separated by mode of transport, origin and country destination, based on this online tool, the statement said.
In 2007, Damco launched SupplyChain CarbonCheck, and later SupplyChain CarbonDashboard and Packaging Optimisation. Its CO2-calculations on myDamco will offer emissions visibility, whereas the SupplyChain CarbonDashboard and SupplyChain CarbonCheck services provide more detailed visibility combined with advice on ways to reduce carbon emissions. Through Damco's packaging optimisation service, carton dimensions and material thickness are optimised.
"This development, and our participation in global supply chain carbon initiatives such as the Clean Cargo Working Group and Green House Gas Protocol Scope 3 Guidelines, speaks for our commitment in this field, and our aim to become our customers' advisor in matters of supply chain sustainability," said global CCO Martin Thaysen.
