TEAMSTERS Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) is threatening to
strike against the Canadian National Railway (CN) on October 28 over working
conditions, alleging excessive hours of work and less time off between trips.
The Teamsters union, which represents about 3,300
conductors, trainmen, yardmen and traffic coordinators, has requested for
extension of mediation talks following a breakdown on October 7.
The breakdown in talks has led to a 21-day "cooling
off" period. The labour contract expired on July 22.
Teamster spokesman Roland Hackl said the issue is
employee safety. CN stands by changes it agreed to, saying they would
"positively affect the health and safety of employees".
Said Mr Hackl: "The railway uses an old tactic:
pointing a gun to its workers' heads to force concessions and the employer
fails to understand that people are not machines and that you should never
place profits before people."
