THE merger of the container shipping
divisions of MOL, "K" Line and NYK into a single
carrier, branded Ocean Network Express (ONE), has been officially announced. The
world's sixth largest container carrier will launch operations on April
1.
The ONE will have a combined fleet
of 250
containerships for a total capacity of 1.4 million TEU. The
Japanese shipping line will launch its first 33 services in April, but
will start accepting bookings in February.
The new container carrier will
control a market share of 6.9 per cent, just behind Hapag-Lloyd's
7.2 per cent market share. The company will wield considerable
influence over the major east-west trades and become the second largest partner
in THE
Alliance.
Headquartered in Singapore and
registered in Japan, the CEO of Ocean Network Express (ONE) will be NYK's
former general director Jeremy Nixon.
