Heavy Industries & Construction (HHIC-Phil) has unveiled the
biggest containership in the world for French shipping giant CMA
CGM at its Redondo shipyard on Subic Bay.
According to Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority
(SBMA) chairwoman Wilma Eisma, this is the first 20,600-TEU ship in the
world, surpassing all others, reports the Manila Bulletin.
HHIC-Phil marked this unprecedented
feat in a Completion Ceremony at the company's 326-hectare Subic facility.
The vessel is considered as one of
the biggest commercial ships in the world today, 400 metres long and 59 metres
wide and 33 metres high from keel to monkey's island.
The newly built vessel is the first
of three
20,600-TEU class Ultra Large Container ships (ULCS) to be delivered by HHIC-Phil
to Marseille-based CMA CGM.
"Building such a huge vessel
brought out the best in HHIC-Phil in terms of technology and innovation,"
said company
CEO Gwang Suk Chung.
"Under the technical
supervision of classification society Bureau Veritas, HHIC-Phil launched the
ship in August ahead of December sea trials," he said.
"This vessel proves the
strength and capability of our Subic shipyard to build in a timely manner mega
ships of much higher quality tonnage that are now shaping the shipping
landscape around the world," said Mr Gwang.
HHIC-Phil is currently building LNG
carriers and crude oil tankers, expected to be delivered by 2020.
The yard has recently expanded its
business to the building coast guard and combat vessels.
