THE Port of Hamburg's container throughput declined
12 per cent to 8.5 million TEU overall with imports falling 8.2 per cent year
on year in 2020.
Nonetheless, Axel Mattern, joint CEO of Port of
Hamburg Marketing, regarded the strong second-half performance as a
positive sign for prospects in the coming year, reported IHS Media.
"The first six months were notable for reduced
activity in many areas of the economy, weaker consumer demand, and a reduction
in liner service sailings," said Mr Mattern.
"In Hamburg, this caused a double-digit downturn in
throughput. We are delighted that the second half brought a turnaround, with
the total throughput in 2020 showing only a single-digit minus."
Hamburg data shows an 8.2 per cent decline in container
volume from China, the port's top trading partner, which Hamburg said could not
be offset by positive development in trade with other regions.
Other 2020 losses came on trades connecting Hamburg with
Russia (down 12.7 per cent year over year), Sweden (down 8.6 per cent), South
Korea (down 10.4 per cent), Brazil (down 11.1 per cent), and Poland (down 7.3
per cent).
Trades in which growth was achieved in 2020 included the
US, which was up 1.8 per cent to a record 591,000 TEU, and the UK, where volume
increased 28.2 per cent year over year to 266,000 TEU.
