[EN-LAN] French Truckers, Cargo Handlers Threaten Strike December 13

FIVE unions has recommended 500,000 French road freight handlers to strike for more wages on December 13 following the rejection of one employers' group (TLF) offer of a three per cent increase.

The road haulage federation, FNTR, has not offered a pay increase, claiming that this is not currently a financially viable option for its members who have not only have been hit by the recession, but also face proposed new French taxes relating to heavy goods vehicles and CO2 emissions.

A report by International Freighting Weekly said the strike action would likely "target distribution hubs supplying temperature-controlled goods to supermarkets in the run-up to Christmas, rather than blockading roads and fuel depots.

"Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau, who has been holding talks with representatives of both sides, told French radio that he thought some of the salary demands were justified, adding "a strike must be avoided at all costs."
