INFINITY Bulk Logistics (IBL), in partnership with the Container Owner Association (COA), has crash tested its multi-layered Flexitank within ISO Marine Containers at TuV Sud Rail testing facility in Gsrlitz, Germany with a 100 per cent leak-free result.
The Flexitank is based on the concept of "Bag in the Box" converting a Dry Marine ISO GP Container used to carry dry cargo to carrying liquid cargo such as palm olein, latex in bulk, base oils and other non-hazardous cargo.
IBL technical director Teo Guan Kee found the Flexitank to be fully intact during tests with no leaks after the same container were subjected to four crash tests.
Each crash resulted within a maximum impact of 12 kilometres per hour and an inspection by a Lloyds Register of Shipping attending surveyor finding both body, valves and the bulkhead intact.
IBK managing director Ronin Chua said in a company statement that the rail crash tests were done to ensure that clients are using proper and safe packaging system with Flexitanks.
"That would also mean that cargo underwriters cannot put 100 per cent liability especially on cargo losses on the Flexitank being insufficient or unsuitable once they have undergone these tests," said Capt Chua.
IBL's leak rate is about the industry norm of two or three units every 1,000 flexitanks moved currently. "To manage this risk and provide comfort to our clients, we are offering tank-to-tank and silo-to-silo services which would take care of almost everything in case of a leak," he added.
IBL is the second manufacturer out of more than 15 globally to achieve this result which adds to its ISO 9001/2008 Quality System certification for manufacturing of the Flexitanks awarded by Lloyds Register of Shipping in December 2009.
