THE Indonesian government, Deutsche Post DHL and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) have launched "Get Airports Ready for Disaster" (GARD) training programme in Indonesia.
Following a successful pilot in 2009 at Makassar and Palu airports, both located on the earthquake-prone island of Sulawesi, it will begin training at the Ngurah Rai airport Denpasar, Bali and El Tari in Kupang, West Timor.
The GARD programme is tailored for airports in disaster-prone regions in order to prepare airports for a disaster relief surge and to enable local disaster relief agencies to better plan and coordinate relief efforts.
The programme supports airports and staff in reviewing airport capabilities and capacities, understanding coordination requirements, training local people (train-the-trainer concept) and helping to formulate a contingency plan and a coordination structure.
This year's training is organised and funded by the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation and is an expansion of the first GARD training which launched in Jakarta in 2009.
