SWISS Post and drone manufacturer Matternet
have successfully deployed drones to fly laboratory samples between two
hospitals in Lugano, Switzerland, paving the way for regular drone
deliveries to the hospitals, starting from 2018.
Swiss
Post, the Ticino EOC hospital group and Matternet kicked off the joint project
in March. Normally, the samples are transported by road, however, the
experiment proved that drones can make transport faster and more efficient,
reported New York's Air Cargo World.
Seventy
autonomous test flights have been conducted between the two hospitals since
mid-March. Further test flights are scheduled, after which an evaluation will
take place. Testing will then be resumed in the summer.
The drone can
transport goods weighing up to two kilogrammes and has a range of 20
kilometres. The drone measures 80 centimetres in diameter.
For
high-value medical transport, safety features include a parachute that would be
released when all the electronics fail. The drone uses infrared signals for
take-off and landing. During its approach, the drone can detect the infrared
signal to ensure a precise landing.
