The Hellenic Coast Guard safely
evacuated all 22 crew members of the bulk carrier Goodfaith that grounded
yesterday on the northern shore of the Greek island Andros, the Aegean
Sea.
18 crewmen were airlifted, while the
local fire department coordinated the land rescue of the remaining
four.
The three tugs sent from Piraeus to
aid the stranded vessel have arrived at the scene.
The coast guard reported a minor oil
spill, which is currently being monitored by Andros Port Authority
officials, and will be dealt with once the weather conditions improve.Strong
winds and high waves are still keeping the 27,308 dwt bulker pinned to the
shore.
The 1994-built bulker ran aground
shortly after midnight, February 11, while en route from the port of Eleusis to
Ukraine’s port of Odessa.
In a distress call sent to the Coast
Guard at around 1:30 a.m. local time, the captain of the Cyprus-flagged vessel
reported the ingress of water and asked for evacuation.
