COSCO Shipping Ports (CSP) first quarter volume increased 15 per cent year on year to 22.7 million TEU while March throughput was up 10 per cent to 7.9 million TEU.

The Bohai Rim ports saw throughput rise 23 per cent year on year in March to 1.6 million TEU driven by Dalia Container Terminal, where volumes grew by half to 806,300 TEU and the Euroasia International Container Terminal at Tianjin port, which attracted 15 per cent more containers.

Qinhuangdao port also contributed to the growth, with the CSP's New Harbour Terminal seeing volume increase by six per cent to 54,400 TEU.

The Yangtze River and Pearl River Delta regions, however, suffered throughput declines of eight per cent and five per cent to 1.6 million TEU and two million TEU respectively in March.

The Pearl River Delta terminals that include Hong Kong, Guangzhou and Shenzhen's Yantian International Container Terminals also saw throughput fall of 10 per cent to 268,300 TEU.

Yantian and the Guangzhou terminals experienced volume declines as well as they approached the one million TEU per month mark, down four and five per cent respectively.

CSP's fringe ports on the southeast and southwest coasts saw a sharp divergence in performance, with the former's throughput rising 26 per cent to 499,300 TEU on the back of a strong performance at Xiamen Ocean Gate Container Terminal, where volumes doubled to 199,300 TEU.

Volumes at the sole southwest coast terminal at Guangxi Qinzhou decreased by two per cent to 109,600 TEU.

The overseas terminals continued to record growth, with throughput up 36 per cent to 2.1 million TEU.
