[240521.EN.SEA] Subic Posts 10pc Rise in Box Volume Despite Fewer Ship Calls

 

THE Philippines' Subic port posted a 10 per cent year-on-year increase in first quarter container volume to 60,759 TEU, reported Panpanga SunStar.

This represented a five per cent increase in imports to 26,441 TEU and a 25 per cent increase in exports totalling 11,775 TEU.

Subic Bay Metropolitan Authority's Seaport Department manager Jerome Martinez said import consisted of raw materials from while exports were largely finished products like tyres and lumber to Japan.

On the other hand, bulk cargo suffered a 23 per cent decrease in volume this year. From January to March, there were only 1.63 million tonnes of goods that entered Subic, compared to 2.11 million tonnes that arrived in Q1 2020.

In terms of port revenue, Mr Martinez also said that collections from vessel charges suffered a 12 per cent decrease, with only PHP39,395,141 (US$81.963) in Q1 2021, compared to PHP44,653,054 last year.

First quarter revenue fell one per cent year on year from cargo charges also dropped to PHP83,625,374 (US$1.7 million) because of a decline in foreign bulk cargo, motor tankers and containerships calling.
