UNITED States Coast Guard has inspected an Alaskan tug
and barge which grounded on Ukolnoi Island, one of seven islands that lie south
of Pavlof Bay on the Alaska Peninsula, en route from Sand Point to Dutch
Harbour.
The first inspection took place several days after the
grounding when the towline between the tug and barge parted despite efforts by
the five-person crew to recover it reports GAC Hot Port News.
During this first aerial survey using a Kodiak-based
HC-130 Hercules aircraft, there were no signs of pollution in additional damage
or visible wildlife impacts to a habitat critical to sea lions and sea otters.
Additional diving crew were able to use sonar survey
while measuring fuel onboard the tug which totalled 20,500 gallons of diesel
and on the barge held 1,800 gallons of diesel for the crane, fork-lift and
generators located on the deck as well as 90 reefer boxes of which 30 contained
frozen fish.
A couple of days later a further aerial survey took
place, which spotted a fuel sheen around the tug, which was dealt with by a
response crew that deployed containment and absorbent booms.
