THE travelling public is coping with a Paris
transit strike by workers of the Regie Autonome des Transports Parisiens
(RATP), which also affects air, rail and road networks.
Aside from being a massive inconvenience, it will impact
freight movement within France and also on routes connecting major cities in
Belgium, Italy and Germany, reports New York's FreightWaves.
Major transport operators have cancelled services. Eurostar
rail has announced that it will cancel 78 trains, which is expected to
hit 50,000 passengers. Workers are protesting the French pension system they
believe needs reform.
Said local freight technology startup Everoad CEO
Maxime Legardez: "It is clear no one knows how long this will
last. We have no idea how big of an impact - direct or indirect - it will have
on the French economy.
"A significant percentage of goods in France are
transported by rail. And with that out of the picture, people will over-solicit
the road carriers. This is a situation where there is a shortage of
capacity," said Mr Legardez.
EasyJet has warned passengers to expect cancellations and
delays, while British Airways has offered flexible bookings.
