[010720.EN.SEA] OOCL Clinches Fuel Efficiency Gong

HONG Kong's Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), now a Cosco unit, has been presented with the Fuel Efficiency Award at the Seatrade Maritime Awards Asia 2020 for its achievement in fuel savings and efficiency improvements.

This annual industry event pays tribute to companies with remarkable achievements in various aspects of Asia's maritime industry. This year, the award winners were announced and virtually participated in the event via an online celebration on June 23.

The Fuel Efficiency Award recognises a company which has demonstrated success in true fuel savings and efficiency improvements with the input of its workforce.

Over the years, OOCL has been taking a proactive role in implementing various fuel-saving initiatives in its fleet and marine operations, successfully reducing carbon emissions by 60 per cent since 2004. The latest technologies, such as OOCL's proprietary Robo-advisor solution, was adopted to actively reduce overall bunker consumption in the fleet.

OOCL's investment in the latest state-of-the-art G-Class vessels have also been performing 48 per cent better than the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) baseline level required by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

In addition, the implementation of the fuel saving incentive scheme was able to motivate the company's crew to contribute their valuable input and effort towards meeting the fuel saving objectives of OOCL.

Managing director of OOCL (Singapore) Pte Ltd, Richard Hew, commented: "This Award is certainly an affirmation of OOCL's efforts in achieving fleet operation efficiency. The adoption of technologies in both software and hardware solutions have helped us achieve significant reductions in fuel consumption and carbon emissions.

"Apart from the fuel saving programme onboard our vessels, the Robo-advisor solution we introduced to leverage the Global Vessel Voyage Monitoring Centre (GVVMC) and AI technology provided us with incredible berth visibility and fuel optimisation models to strengthen the decision-making process of marine operations and thereby improve our services to customers."
