[010713.EN.SEA] Emirates Shipping Line Received Jiangsu 4,800-TEUer From China Yard

ABU DHABI's Emirates Shipping Line (ESL) has received its first of two 4,770-TEU vessels ordered by Hamburg's Hammonia Shipping and built by China's Jiangsu New Yangzijiang shipyard.

The Hammonia Istria will be chartered under the name of Emirates Pearl and be deployed on its CIS China-India service to replace the 4,250-TEU Jpo Vela. ESL runs the service in partnership with OOCL and APL, which markets the loop as CIX. ESL provides one of the six vessels on this service.

The baby-overpanamax vessel has a length of 255.10 metres and a beam of 37.3 metres, equivalent of 15 rows and offers 600 reefer plugs. The Jiangsu 4,800-TEU vessels are strikingly similar to the Hyundai-built Maersk Wafmax (Maersk-C-type) series except for the fact the baby-over panamax is gearless rather than fully geared.

It is seen as a natural successor for many ageing panamaxes and maxi-panamaxes that need to be replaced in coming years.
