DP WORLD's London Gateway terminal welcomed the 5,057-TEU
Safmarine Nokwanda, one of eight similar-sized vessels deployed on the weekly
service from North Europe to South Africa carrying fruit and wine.
Safmarine, a founding member of the South Africa Europe
Container Service (SAECS), which includes Maersk and MOL and Deutsche
Africa-Linien (DAL), will upgrade its current panamax vessels of 6,500-7,000
TEUs in the first quarter of 2014.
Tilbury-based shipping port agents MK Shipping for
Safmarine and Maersk said the cargo operation at the new deepsea container
terminal went without a problem before the vessel departed for Bremerhaven.
MK's business development manager Alistair Flint hopes
that the calling of these big name carriers will lead to an increase in
business, and its associated niche port services company TLS would grow as more
scheduled services and ad-hoc vessels will visit the UK's newest port.
