THE Sichuan section of the Chengdu-Kunming double-track
railway has started construction, according to Sichuan Railway Industry
Investment Group, reports Xinhua.
The double-track line of Chengdu-Kunming Railway or
Chengkun Railway starts from Sichuan province' capital city Chengdu to Kunming
in southern Yunnan province and is divided into several sections including
Chengdu-Emei, Emei-Miyi, Miyi-Panzhihua, Yongren-Guangtong and
Guangtong-Kunming section. It is 737 kilometres long with 632 kilometres in
Sichuan province.
The Guangtong-Kunming section, also under construction,
was expected to open before January with construction of Chengdu-Emei,
Miyi-Panzhihua, Yongren-Guangtong section about the same time.
The double-track line is scheduled to be completed by
2020. After completion, the travel time will be two and a half hours from
Chengdu to Xichang, three hours to Panzhihua and just over five hours to
Kunming from the original 18 hours.
Once completed, the old Chengkun Railway will focus on
freight service. The Chengkun double-track rail line will reach coastal areas
in southern Guangxi Autonomous region through linking Guiyang-Kunming Railway
in the south. Thus, it will become a major trunk line between Sichuan province
and ASEAN countries.
