BIG Nigerian unions plan a
nationwide "indefinite" strike today January 9 that will affect the
operations of ports and major businesses, reported London's Containerisation
International.
Backed by the Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC), the strike is to
protest and end to fuel subsidies from January 2, which is expected to double
petrol prices from NGN65 (US$0.40) to NGN140 ($0.86) and the transport fares as
well. Most of Nigeria's 160 million people live on less than $2 a day.
A court ordered unions to
call off the strike, but one union said it planned to go ahead anyway, reported
the BBC, adding that union lawyers did not attend the "hastily convened
hearing".
Said the union statement:
"Nigerians should stockpile basic needs especially of food and water. All
offices, oil production centres, air and sea ports, fuel stations, markets,
banks will be shut down."
