THE UN's International
Maritime Organisation (IMO) is urging member states to ratify the international
Ballast Water Management Convention to take prompt action ahead of the fixed
deadline to commence early enforcement.
Speaking to the
International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) conference in London IMO
secretary-general Koji Sekimizu said shipping industry had fallen short of
expectations in the area of ballast water treatment.
"The problems
associated with ballast water are inherently connected to the expansion of
world trade," said Mr Sekimizu. "This is an issue from which the
shipping industry cannot escape."
Mr Sekimizu also spoke of
the importance of energy efficiency measures adopted as it awaits formal entry
into force with expectations that the IMO's Marine Environment Protection
Committee would make market-based measures akin to the controversial European
aviation carbon tax on greenhouse gas reduction when it meets late next year.
