SCHENKER Limited, the UK arm of the global services
provider DB Schenker Logistics, has opened its new headquarters building at
London Heathrow Airport.
This follows the completion of the 9,900-square-metre
facility, which will also serves as the main air freight hub for the group in
the UK.
"The facility is perfectly located for access to all
areas of the airport and our 15 year lease, shows real commitment to London
Heathrow," said Helgi Ingolfsson, managing director, Schenker Limited.
The new corporate office is constructed as a "green building,"
which is designed to achieve 25 per cent lower carbon emissions with rainwater
harvesting, a heat recovery ventilation system and both PIR (passive infrared)
and photoelectric lighting controls. This means less emission of carbon dioxide
and thus will contribute to the group's sustainability strategy DB 2020.
DB Schenker intends to cut the specific CO2 emissions by
20 per cent over 2006 levels by 2020. Ninety-five per cent of concrete was
recycled from the original site; and the building has also been awarded a
BREEAM rating of Excellent (BRE Environmental Assessment Method).
"What we wanted was to make DB Schenker, Heathrow a
very modern facility that is 'the place to work' at London Heathrow, a great
environment for our people to work in. Beyond we wanted an eco-friendly
facility to handle our air freight customers cargo in, both now and in the
future, I think we have achieved that," said Helgi Ingolfsson.
