[011212.EN.SEA] Ocean Freight Rates Collapse Amid Excess Capacity, Weak Winter Demand

THE Far East-Europe ocean shipping trades have experienced their worst vessel utilisation rates so far this year with levels falling to 75-80 per cent in the early stages of the slack winter period.

Maersk continues to bear the brunt of global vessel idling, with 12 units at 90,800 TEU capacity combined identified as unemployed, excluding ships undergoing routine general repairs. This was largely attributed to the shelving of two Far East-Europe strings earlier in November.

As of November 19, Alphaliner's data shows that 274 containerships for a combined 768,000 TEU were idle, down from 282 units at 763,000 TEU a fortnight earlier.

It said the shipping lines failure to withdraw more capacity has prompted freight rates to plummet on both the Far East-Europe and transpacific trades as carriers struggle to fill the slots.

"Although carriers have announced another round of rate increases on both the Far East-Europe and transpacific routes in mid-December, the chances for success are slim unless more carriers follow Maersk's lead in taking out excess capacity," said Alphaliner.
