FRENCH
shipping giant CMA CGM's subsidiary ContainerShips has
performed the first LNG bunkering in Europe while loading and unloading in
Rotterdam, reported Fort Lauderdale's Maritime Executive.
The operation was conducted on the 1,380-TEU Containerships Nord,
when it took on 200 tons of LNG from Shell to become the first box ship in
Europe to do so using ship-to-ship bunkering.
Containerships expects this to be repeated on its sister
ship Containerships
Polar
as it will reduce time in port, says the company, reducing and transit times
and speeding delivery between the Northern Range and Baltic ports.
Two more sister ships are expected to be delivered this
year from the Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard: Containerships Arctic and
Containerships Aurora.
A pioneer in the use of LNG to power containerships, CMA
CGM is set to take delivery of 20 LNG-powered vessels by 2022,
including nine 22,000-TEU ships, which are to be delivered from 2020.
