[140115.EN.SEA] Refrigerated Containers Expected To Dominate Reefer Trade

AN estimated 101.1 million tonnes of fresh produce was transported in conventional reefer ships and reefer containers in 2014, according to Dynamo’s annual reefer market report.

Seventy four per cent of the total was transported in containers, highlighting that conventional reefer ships are continuing to lose market share to container operators, as shown by The Reefer Analysis: Market Structure, Conventional, Containers report, by Franz Wails.

And this trend is expected to continue in the years to come. A decade ago half of total fresh produce volumes were transported in containers, rising to 62 per cent in 2009.

Mr Wails said that one of the contributory factors behind the development is that fruit trades are increasingly sacrificing their conventional services in exchange for slots on container services, reported Lloyd's Loading List.

This development began in 2011; and Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) has been particularly successful in attracting fruit growers.

This year No boa axed its Ecuadorian Line service between Ecuador, the US east coast and north Europe for slots on MSC services while Chiquita will provide reefer cargo for a new Central America east coast US MSC service.

As a result of the switch from conventional to containers, the report also pointed out that reefer operators are looking to become hybrid operators offering both types of ship.

The main development on this front was world's largest reefer ship operator Seatrade Reefer Chartering's decision in July to acquire two geared 2,200 TEU box ships due for delivery in 2016.

"Seatrade has emphasized that this order was the start of a larger newbuilding programme involving similar reefer heavy box ships, perhaps even up to 20 units, as the end of the year rumour goes," the Dynamar report said.

"If the latter is correct, there may also be truth in the story that, at the same time, the company is to order 20 smaller specialised conventional reefer units, mainly for the deep frozen carriage of fish and meat."

In terms of the orderbook, just one conventional reefer ship is currently being built: a 200,000 cubic foot vessel for Toei Reefer Line for delivery in mid-2015. It will be the first new reefer vessel handed over since October 2011.

As a result of the lack of new orders and an average age of the existing fleet of 24 years, Mr Waal expects the conventional fleet to decline by 60 per cent to 140 vessels by 2025, should no new conventional reefers be built on any substantial scale.

In contrast, the number of reefer containers continues to increase rapidly.

Last year, the number of reefer boxes increased by five per cent year on year to reach 2.5 million TEU, most of which are 40-foot high cube containers.

[140115.ID.BIZ] Gazprom Dituding Sabotase Moncrief Oil

[130115.EN.SEA] Named After SS Man, World's Biggest Ship Brings Controversy to Rotterdam

BILLED as the biggest ship in the world, the massive gantry crane carrier, Pieter Schelte, has arrived in Rotterdam, bringing with it much controversy, including an unsung Nazi heritage.

The ship was also marked by a difference in tonnage readings, at first weighing in at 50,000 tons deadweight, but then reporting a gross tonnage of 75,000 tons.

This stark difference prompted the HK Shipping Gazette to check out Wikipedia, as it had recently learned that a grounded car carrier Hoegh Osaka off Southampton had weighed in at 51,000 gross tons but only 16,880 deadweight.

Wikipedia explained that gross tonnage is the volume a ship's enclosed spaces from keel to funnel expressed as 2.83 cubic metres per gross tonnne.

Deadweight tonnage is the displacement, that is the actual weight of a ship fully loaded, minus its displacement weight when completely empty. Warships are gauged by displacement tonnage.

Satisfied that this accounted for the difference, but then wondering who would enjoy the honour to having the world biggest ship named after him, the Shipping Gazette again searched the Web to learn that the choice had aroused much controversy,

The ship was built by the Swiss company Allseas, and its founder, Edwin Heerema, wanted the world's biggest ship named after his father, Pieter Schelte, a renowned maritime engineer. reported the Daily Telegraph in London.

But the Telegraph also reported that Pieter Schelte was a member of the SS (Schutzstaffel), the private paramilitary of the Nazi party, news of which provoked an outcry from politicians and Jewish groups.

The Port of Rotterdam makes no mention of this in its press release, but says "with a length of 382 metres and a width of 124 metres, this is the biggest ship in the world. It was designed and developed by the Dutch-Swiss offshore company Allseas", said the Rotterdam Port Authority.

The Pieter Schelte will spend the next four months in Rotterdam undergoing final assembly in the inner lake of Maasvlakte 2.

Among other things, 65-metre long support beams will be fitted to the ship. Including this work, the spin-off of the total construction of the vessel for Dutch business is estimated at EUR700 million (US$826.1 million), said the release.

"The arrival of the Pieter Schelte is to strengthen the Rotterdam offshore sector's new port sites in the existing port area and on the Maasvlakte," said port CEO Allard Castelein.

The Maasvlakte provides possibilities on existing sites, on sites still to be developed and the plots of water on Maasvlakte 2 can also be put to good use for the offshore industry, he said.

[130115.ID.AIR] Jonan Anulir Sanksi Maskapai, Aneh Bin Ajaib

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Pengamat penerbangan Gerry Soejatman mendesak Menteri Perhubungan Ignasius Jonan segera mengusut kekeliruan dalam audit izin penerbangan maskapai nasional.

To non-professionals, it looks like a disaster: The Höegh Osaka, a large car-carrier currently sitting lopsided in shallow water off the port of Southampton, was beached by its crew on Saturday night and images of the ship — just sitting there, half-sunk in the Solent — have dominated the UK media ever since. But the deliberate decision to run the boat aground was not an unhappy accident.

Rather, it was a mastery of piloting and ship handling. "Things could have been much worse," says the chairman of the UK Maritime Pilots' Association (UKMPA).The ship's company said in a statement that the captain and the pilot of the Höegh Osaka noticed that the ship was dangerously listing to one side, and decided to strand her deliberately in order to prevent further damage.Business Insider spoke with Captain Don Cockrill, a professional pilot at the Port of London and chairman of UKMPA, to figure out what actually happened on board. "The quick thinking, decisions and actions of the Southampton port pilot on board the Höegh Osaka with the ship’s captain and his team resulted not only in the prevention of a major catastrophic event for the ship, but most importantly, saving the lives of the 25 crew members." he said.

Cockrill explained that every time a ship of that size is leaving a port, the captain is helped by a professional pilot from the same port, who literally drives the vessel to safe waters. It is a tough job: "ships grow bigger and bigger, but the ports have remained the same as decades ago," Cockrill said. It is like having the same garage, but buying a larger car: it might fit, but it's harder to drive in.Cockrill reconstructed what happened on the Höegh Osaka on Saturday night: the operators would have rapidly realised that something was going wrong and the ship was listing dangerously. Before losing control of the vessel, the pilot and the captain decided to run aground on shallow waters, where the bottom of the sea is higher and the Höegh Osaka could easily be stranded safely.

According to Cockrill, the instability was not apparent until rounding the Bramble Bank bend so about an hour after it left Southampton at 8.20 p.m.: The pilot would have had only seconds to decide they had to beach the vessel, give orders to the crew, plot a course to the bank, and then successful "park" the ship on top of it.As well as lowering the safety risk for the crew, it also kept the navigation channel towards the port open. In fact Southampton port is now operating as per usual — despite the massive shipwreck a few hundred yards from its mouth. If the ship had capsized, the crew's lives would have been at serious risk; the cargo likely lost; and Southampton port would have been clogged for days. "Thankfully, there was a very expert pilot on board, who knew what he was doing," Cockrill said.

Concerning what might have caused the lifting in the first stance, "it is all related to the stability of the ship," Cockrill said. "We are talking of a big ship, but not extremely huge, and the analysis did not reveal any mechanical issue so far. It is more likely that some tanks of fuel or water towards the bottom were half full, prompting a certain instability. The effect of a sudden crash of water on one side or the other is far greater than you expect, even for such a big ship."Reuters/Peter NichollsOn Monday salvage experts from Svitzer, a vessel rescuing company, were on board the Höegh Osaka to assess the damage and inspect the cargo, the BBC reported. A press conference at the Grand Harbour Hotel in Southampton on Monday evening confirmed that the salvage experts could decide to start working on the vessel tomorrow.

That would involve towing the ship on higher waters and slowly putting back afloat, an operation that could solve the situation by Wednesday at noon, when the tide is the highest. At the same time, weather and tidal conditions play a major role in this sort of operations and the team is also considering to leave the vessel anchored where it currently stands for now and wait for more favourable conditions. This, though, could take months, The Telegraph wrote. There are about 1,400 vehicles on board, including 1,200 Jaguar and Land Rover first-class cars, 65 BMW Minis, and 105 JCB agricultural machines.
