[100415.ID.SEA] Aden Still Closed By Shelling, Other Ports Open Despite Looming Blockade Risk

SHELLING from pro-Iranian Houthi tanks has closed the Port of Aden, where street-to-street fighting continues, but other ports remain open, according to GAC Hot Port News.

Only oil shipments from Aden Refinery are getting out, but dry cargo movement has stopped as dockers refuse to work under fire.

The Yemeni Red Sea ports of Hodeidah, Saleef, Mokha and Ras Isa are operating normally as there are no hostilities in the area. Offshore terminals are also functioning.

The still-open ports are so far not under blockade by any naval forces of the Saudi Arabian coalition, and no vessels been hindered from calling.

But an Iranian destroyer, which is considered the largest combatant ship afloat with the exception of rare cruisers, is supposedly hunting for pirates off the Yemeni coast, and whose gunnery could outclass the Saudi armour deployed in maritime port environments.

[100415.ID.SEA] Surabaya Jadi Kota Pertama Punya Pelabuhan Terhubung KA, Jakarta Menyusul

[090415.EN.BIZ] China's Trainmakers Make Record Profits From Deals at Home and Abroad

CHINA's top trainmaker China CNR Corp Ltd's posted a 33 per cent year-on-year increase in net profit to CNY5.5 billion (US$886.2 million) in 2014 while CSR Corp's net profit increased 27.6 per cent to CNY5.3 billion.

Both companies' net profit growth marked the fastest pace since 2011, according to Reuters, which provided no corresponding revenue figures.

Rail builder China Railway Construction's Corp Ltd (CRCC) 2014 net profit increased 9.65 per cent to CNY11.3 billion, while China Railway Group (CRG) net profit was up 10.5 per cent to CNY10.4 billion.

"The railway market is generally growing, but market competition is becoming fierce," CNR said in a filing on the Hong Kong stock exchange. "The company faces dual pressure from domestic competitors and international corporations."

Chinese trainmakers exported CNY26.77 billion in equipment in 2014, up 22.6 per cent year on year, while the country's project contractors signed US$24.7 billion in contracts worldwide, according to customs data.

Deals included a US$567 million contract in October by CNR to supply trains to Boston, Massachusetts, which was a first Sino-US rail equipment deal.

Beijing is in the midst of merging CNR and CSR into an enlarged firm able to compete globally with Germany's Siemens and Canada's Bombardier to sell high-speed rail technology.

But China has encountered snags in Mexico where the government cancelled the tender for a $3.75 billion high-speed rail tender but Beijing plans to spend a further CNY800 billion on domestic rail lines this year.

[080415.EN.SEA] Mega Ships Get Fatter But Not Much Longer, Limiting Cranes Alongside

THE mega problem with mega ships is that there are no purpose-built mega ports to handle cargo in a manner befitting of tomorrow's state-of-the-art 20,000-TEU containership, says Drewry Maritime Research.

Drewry analysts point out a crucial technological shortcoming for even the biggest ports - that ships may be getting fatter, but not much longer. An 18,000-TEU box ship is only 25 per cent longer than a 7,400-TEU vessel yet has 150 per cent more capacity.

For example, the 19,200-TEU MSC Oscar is less than twice the length of a first generation 1,400-TEU ship, but its capacity is 14 times greater, reports Newark's Journal of Commerce.

That means that the number of cranes alongside cannot grow proportionally with the increasing ship sizes, and the broader and deeper the cranes must reach to draw boxes cuts into their moves per hour.

Putting it another way, a 19,000-TEU vessel is 50 per cent bigger than a 13,000-TEU ship, but the berth moves per day are only 20 per cent higher.

"Bigger ships are spending proportionately more of a round voyage in port than their predecessors. Overall berth productivity does increase with ship size," said Drewry.

"Cost and availability of labour restricts the number of additional cranes that can be deployed on each ship," Drewry noted in its latest weekly Container Insight.

To meet the industry target of 6,000 moves in 24 hours demanded in 2011 by Maersk Line's then-CEO Eivind Kolding, a 19,000-TEU ship would require eight cranes, each working at 35 moves per hour, instead of 25, generating a berth productivity of 280 moves per hour.

Drewry said an industry consensus held that 3,000 to 3,500 moves in 24 hours is a realistic top-end performance for a large terminal handling large vessels.

Yet once Maersk sought 6,000 moves a day on a 19,000-TEU ship that would require eight cranes, each working at 35 moves per hour, instead of 25. Maersk Line CEO Soren Skou saw the limit of 40 moves per hour.

According to the JOC, the UAE's Khor Fakkan has the world's highest berth productivity, achieving 179 berth moves per hour on average in 2013, that's 4,300 moves in 24 hours.

[070415,EN.SEA] Draft Limitations at Santos Force Box Ships to Reduce Capacity

NEW draft restrictions on containerships calling at Santos in Brazil, supported by warnings from pilots that shallow channels pose dangers to navigation, is hurting the bottom line of ocean liners and terminal operators and affecting their services.

For every 500 centimetres of draft lost, the 10,900-TEU CMA CGM Tigris, which was built for the east coast of South America market, must reduce its load by 1,458 TEU, according to Sindamar, the Santos ship agents association.

A manager at one of Santos's five box terminals told Newark's Journal of Commerce that since the end of last year the Santos pilots and their union, called Conapra, have been interpreting the official permitted drafts in a "way that they have never done before."

"And this is causing massive headaches for all concerned, shipowners, shippers and for us in the terminals," the terminal manager said. "What they have done is to reduce the official draft at high tide."

According to a senior executive of a global carrier with several services operating out of Brazil, all major shipping lines were "operating with severe and unnecessary draft restrictions" to the number of containers that their ships are being permitted to handle.

He said the restrictions relate to needed dredging at the port. "The tender process for more capital dredging just isn't moving fast enough. It is all so political in Santos and Brasilia right now and there are many opposing forces clashing with each other, so nothing gets done."

Santos pilots say that until the dredging of the port's channel and berth is completed vessel length should be restricted to 266 metres, putting the port off limits to the biggest ships, such as the CMA CGM Tigris, which has recently started calling Santos.

The tender process for capital dredging at Santos to 15 metres is underway, but even if that proceeds without any delays the new draft will not be completed until early next year, by which time carriers will see volumes cut unnecessarily.
