[210416.EN.BIZ] Dual Fuel Engines Allow 14,000-TEUer To Rival 20,000-TEUer On Economy

THE first in a series of 10 efficient 14,000-TEU ships, the NYK Blue Jay will benefit from the dual-rating capability of the narrow nine-cylinder Wertsila X82 diesel engine that allows for higher hydrodynamic efficiency.

The first in a series of same size ships delivered by Japan Marine United Corporation to shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), are designed to compete with new 20,000-TEUer on operating economy.

The NYK Blue Jay (364 metres long, 50.6 metres abeam) is the first of 10 vessels that, despite their smaller capacity can switch between two operating profiles both with optimised fuel efficiency.

The dual-rating capability is based on a system of electronically controlled fuel injection and exhaust valve actuation, combined with turbochargers with very wide compressor maps, reports Motorship, of Fareham, near Portsmouth, England.

Rudolf Holtbecker, general manager, business & application development, WinGD, said: "Shipowners wish to be able to respond to market conditions by having closer control over the fuel costs of their ships. With the X engines, shipowners can use their engines either with a low or a high maximum power output, further improving fuel consumption."

[200416.EN.BIZ] Stifel Data Shows Both Last Quarter Air-Sea Freight Fell 2.2pc

BOTH air and ocean freight volumes fell by 2.2 per cent during the fourth quarter of 2015 compared to the same period a year earlier, according to the Stifel Transportation & Logistics Group.

In the air freight division, gross profit per ton was mixed among the public forwarders, averaging a 0.3 per cent increase from the fourth quarter of 2014.

Most forwarders reported year-on-year gains. DHL, DSV and Kuehne + Nagel posted increases, while Expeditors International and Panalpina experienced declines, reported American Shipper.

But profit per TEU in ocean freight was strong across the board, averaging a seven per cent year-on-year increase during the quarter, resulting from lower buy rates, said Stifel.

Overall, ocean freight rates remain plagued by overcapacity. "We believe higher ocean freight rates would lead to an increase in forwarder profitability by providing an opportunity to improve gross profit per container," Stifel said.

"Air freight has also had its issues with overcapacity, because the international passenger traffic market has been growing significantly faster than the air cargo market, adding belly space capacity faster than demand."

In the fourth quarter, Kuehne + Nagel's air freight tonnage and ocean freight volumes rose 3.5 per cent and 3.3 per cent year on year, respectively.

DHL suffered an 11.8 per cent decline in air freight tonnage during the fourth quarter. Panalpina's air freight tonnage rose three per cent from the fourth quarter of 2014, but its ocean freight volumes dived 5.3 per cent year on year.

Looking ahead, Stifel anticipates very slow, low single-digit global trade growth in 2016, with a suppressed air freight market in the first quarter of 2016, resulting from high inventory levels and little need for rapid replenishment in the global supply chain. On the flip side, Stifel said ocean freight industry volumes may rise during the quarter.

[200416.ID.BIZ] Intel PHK 12.000 Karyawannya

NEW YORK.

[190416.EN.BIZ] International Chamber of Shipping Favours Stringent IMO Regulations

THE International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) has made a number of submissions to address the need to reduce the sector's CO2 emissions, focus on problems with the implementation of the IMO Ballast Water Management Convention, and the need for an immediate IMO decision on whether ships will have to use 0.5 per cent sulphur fuel in 2020.

ICS submissions come ahead of this year's International Maritime Organisation's Environment Committee (MEPC) meeting, reported London's Tanker Operator.

The ICS explained that its immediate priority is to help ensure that the new global CO2 data collection system is adopted by IMO as soon as possible. This will then facilitate the possible development of additional CO2 reduction measures.

ICS secretary general, Peter Hinchliffe, explained; "The data global system now before the MEPC is a workable compromise between governments primarily interested in data on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions and those that wish to collect additional information, for example on so called transport work."

In a separate submission to the meeting, ICS responded to the Paris Agreement on climate change with a radical proposal that IMO should develop an Intended IMO Determined Contribution for CO2 reduction on behalf of the sector.

However, ICS emphasised that with the Paris Agreement international shipping should not be expected to make the same level of CO2 commitments as developed economies.

In a submission - made jointly with Intertanko - ICS explained how the BWM Convention's entry into force expected by the end of 2017 will present ship operators with a major challenge because of the expected lack of shipyard capacity needed to retrofit the new treatment equipment.

ICS said that many shipowners have understandably delayed fitting equipment, due to a lack of certainty as to whether it will be regarded as fully compliant.

ICS will also explain to governments the problems created by the different approval regimes that have been adopted by the US and the need, so far as possible, to make the IMO guidelines compatible with the US approach, especially with respect to defining what is a "non-viable" marine organism and the test methods used for approving ultra-violet systems in ballast water treatment systems.

As for the upcoming sulphur cap, the MARPOL Convention requires that ships outside of emission control areas must use fuel containing no more than 0.5 per cent sulphur in 2020, but leaves open the possibility of postponement until 2025, depending on the outcome of a study into the availability of compliant fuel currently being conducted by IMO.

[190416.ID.BIZ] Merugi, Zalora Nyaris Kehabisan Uang

Jakarta - Zalora, perusahaan e-commerce terfokus di Asia Tenggara yang didanai oleh Rocket Internet tampaknya mulai kehabisan uang.

Menurut laporan keuangan perusahaan, Zalora menderita rugi kotor (sebelum pajak, bunga, depresiasi dan amortisasi, perusahaan) sebesar US$ 259 juta dari periode 2013-2015, sementara menurut data Tech in Asia, Zalora hanya memiliki pendanaan eksternal dari investor sebesar US$ 238 juta.

[180416.EN.SEA] Mergers to Remake Shipping Alliance Structure as Carriers Make Plea to Regulators

MAJOR shipping alliances could become much bigger by month's end as carriers vie for regulatory approvals for new tie-ups, reports the Wall Street Journal.

Cosco is considering joining Ocean Three or leading a new alliance with CSCL, people familiar with the situation said. The Cosco-CSCL merged entity is called China Cosco Shipping Group, based in Shanghai.

CMA CGM has told European regulators that it will withdraw NOL from another alliance, called G6, which controls an 18 per cent market share in Asia-Europe.

NOL's container unit, APL, expects to stay in G6 until the first quarter of 2017. CMA declined to comment.Industry executives said changes are coming as China Ocean Shipping Co, or Cosco, and China Shipping Group are seeking approval for their merger from the European Union and US regulators.

French shipping giant CMA CGM also seeks regulatory approval for its US$2.4 billion buyout of Singapore's Neptune Orient Lines, whose principal holding is its container line APL.

"Chances are that the alliances you see today will change significantly over the next two weeks," said William Doyle, a commissioner of regulatory Federal Maritime Commission.

"The alliances have in fact changed already because of the recent consolidation among four major carriers," Mr Doyle said. "We are expecting their proposals for regulatory approvals."

The European Commission, the EU's regulator, has set April 29 as its deadline to decide on the merger of CMA CGM and NOL.

CMA CGM and China Shipping Container Lines, the container unit of China Shipping Group, currently belong to the Ocean Three alliance along with Dubai-based United Arab Shipping Co.

The alliance has a 22 per cent market share of all cargo moved between Asia and Europe, the world's busiest ocean trade route.

"We are becoming a larger shipping line and we are in the position to select the partners with whom we want to do business," said CMA CGM vice chairman Rodolphe Saade.

"We are discussing with the new China Shipping group, but we are also discussing with others."

Cosco belongs to a different alliance, called CKYHE, made up of Asian operators. CKYHE controls a 25 per cent share of the Asia-Europe trade loop.

Industry leaders Maersk Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC), of the 2M alliance have a 34 per cent market share.

"Regardless of the regulators, the alliances themselves can't accept merged entities where their members belong to different groupings," said Chris Welsh, secretary-general of Global Shippers' Forum, which represents cargo owners.

Alliance members share ships, networks and port calls, saving hundreds of millions of dollars in annual costs as the industry remains mired in one of its worst downturns ever.

Anemic economic growth in Europe and falling growth in China is exacerbated by an estimated 30 per cent overcapacity, resulting in freight rates that barely cover fuel costs.

"The only alliance which will likely stay intact is 2M because of their dominant position," Commissioner Doyle said.

Regulatory approvals can take up to three months or longer. In the past, alliances got the green light by regulators if their combined market share was below 35 per cent.

"I expect the four existing alliances to become three after the merger shake-up and some carriers being left out of the new alliances," said Lars Jensen, chief executive of Copenhagen-based SeaIntelligence Consulting.
