THE Secretary General of the
International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Raymond Benjamin has called
for the further strengthening of air cargo security by using better tools, such
as technology and advance information on cargo shipments.
Speaking at the joint
conference on enhancing air cargo security and facilitation in Singapore, he
said customs authorities and security regulators can enhance air cargo security
by agreeing on how advance cargo information can be collected, assessed and
used to mitigate risk.
Mr Benjamin said that the
industry needs to promote seamless operations by avoiding unnecessary
duplication of security measures. It also needs to harmonise the standards in
place in different countries, Singapore's Channel News Asia reported.
The two-day joint
conference, which is the first collaboration of this kind with the ICAO and
World Customs Organisation (WCO), brought together more than 300 aviation
security and customs authorities, as well as private sector stakeholders, from
40 countries.
The aim was to identify ways
to further enhance co-ordination and co-operation to strengthen aviation and
border security while facilitating the secure and smooth movement of air cargo.
