TAIWAN's big container shipping line Evergreen will receive the first of twenty 8,000-TEU ships this month.
Evergreen is spending US$2.06 billion at Samsung Heavy Industries for the "L-type" ships, which will be delivered through to 2015, reports SinoShip News.
Evergreen has 10 similar ships under construction at CSBC in Taiwan costing a total of $1.03 billion, while it has recently concluded a charter deal with Athens-based Enesel to take a series of 13,800 TEU ships that are to be built at Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Evergreen's massive fleet build-up will result in a fleet of nearly 200 ships, surpassing that of China's top player Cosco and propelling the company into fourth place on the global league tables.
Evergreen had thought to lease these vessels from Korea Infrastructure Investments Asset Management Co Ltd, but negotiations did not pan out because both sides could not reach a consensus on technical issues within a mutually agreed time limit, reported the Taipei Times.
The 40 vessels will increase Evergreen Marin's capacity by 378,000 TEU after they are all delivered in 2015.
