THE Mediterranean Shipping Co (MSC) was at
the forefront of discussions on block chain technology at the Geneva
Block Chain Congress at Palexpo that attracted 1,000
participants from 30 countries.
With a focus on sustainability, the event aimed to
promote constructive discussions between international standard-setting bodies,
national governments that create legal frameworks, and private-sector
companies.
MSC participated in the event for the first time to explain
how block chain technology is set to transform the container shipping by
boosting traceability and visibility, as it creates a ledger of all documents
which cannot be altered once they are added to a platform, and can be shared by
all parties.
Mac’s chief digital and information officer took
part in a workshop, entitled "Together by Blockchaining the Supply
Chains."
Another MSC speaker, Laurent Audaz, head of
insurances, legal and claims also took to the stage to discuss, "Block
chain & ID Technology in the Illicit-Trade & Counterfeiting
Fight."
Entitled "Block chain to Shape the Future of Container
Shipping," Andre Samna’s speech includes insight on how enabled-enabled
instantly available information makes it easier to view and manage shipments,
documents and transactions along the supply chain.
He also highlighted how smart containers and enabled can be
combined to achieve paperless operations and reach unprecedented levels of efficiency
and traceability.
Laurent Audaz participated in a roundtable discussion with
a short presentation entitled, "Enabled to Fight Illicit-Trade and
Counterfeiting at Sea." He emphasised the serious risks posed by illicit
trade for shipping lines like MSC and highlighted how digitisation and block
chaining of the whole supply chain will help tackle the issue of cargo
misdeclaration by adding security and safety.
