[270619.EN.BIZ] First Female to Take The Helm at Singapore Shipping Association

The Council of the Singapore Shipping Association (SSA) - the industry voice of the Lion City's maritime community - has made history by nominating the its first-ever female president since its founding in 1985.

At its 23rd Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on June 26, 2019, the 2019/2021 Council elected Caroline Yang as the association's president.

Ms Yang, who's chief executive of Hong lam Marine, started her career with the company as their in-house counsel in 1991 and has more than 25 years' experience in the shipping industry.

She'll be supported by two vice presidents and the SSA secretariat headed by Michael Phoon. The two vice presidents nominated are Katie Men, managing director of Iseaco Investment and Rene Piil Pedersen, managing director of AP Moller Singapore.

Commenting on her nomination, Ms Yang said: "The shipping community in Singapore has much to be proud of. This year, Singapore bagged the 'Best Seaport in Asia' for 31st time and also the 'Best Green Seaport' at the 2019 Asia Freight, Logistics and Supply Chain Awards. We were also recognised as the 'Top Leading Maritime Capital of the World' for the fourth consecutive time in a report issued by Menon Economics and DNV GL.

"Notwithstanding, the industry continues to face challenging conditions and digital disruptions. As we navigate into the future together, the task of the Council is to work with all stakeholders to champion Maritime Singapore, to keep SSA relevant and responsive to our members, and to encourage participation by our members in our shared goal."

Ms Yang also thanked the outgoing president for his contribution to the industry: "I would also like to place on record the Council's deep appreciation to immediate-past president Esben Poulsson, who has been a tireless champion of the Singapore shipping industry. His term is marked by the move of SSA Secretariat into digitalisation, and expansion of membership, and by preparing the industry for sweeping changes such as the sulphur oxides cap that goes into effect in January 2020."

[260619.EN.BIZ] Banks Set New Lending Criteria For Shipping Industry to Cut CO2 Emissions

NON-PROFIT organisations Rocky Mountain Institute, Global Maritime Forum and UCL Energy Institute have announced that 11 major shipping banks, representing a bank loan portfolio to global shipping of US$100 billion will for the first time integrate climate considerations into lending decisions to encourage maritime shipping's decarbonisation.

Shipping accounts for 2.2 per cent of world carbon dioxide emissions, according to the International Maritime Organisation that sets regulations on pollution from ships. The lending framework, called the "Poseidon Principles," will assess and disclose whether financial institutions' lending portfolios are in line with the IMO's climate goals adopted in 2018.

The banks involved include Citi, Societe Generale, DNB, Danish Ship Finance, Danske Bank and Norway's DVB. More signatories are expected following the official launch in a few months, according to Michael Parker, global industry head of Shipping and Logistics at Citigroup.

"As banks, we recognise that our role in the shipping industry enables us to promote responsible environmental stewardship. The Poseidon Principles will not only serve our institutions to improve decision making at a strategic level but will also shape a better future for the shipping industry and our society," Mr Parker said.

[200619.EN.BIZ] US Department of Transportation Launches Port Infrastructure Plan

The US Department of Transportation (DOT) has announced a Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) to apply for US$292.7 million in discretionary grants through the new Port Infrastructure Development Programme, reports the American Journal of Transportation.

"This major investment will help strengthen, modernise, and improve our country's maritime systems and gateway ports," said US Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao.

As the Trump administration continues to invest in America's infrastructure, this new programme aims to support public coastal ports by improving the safety, efficiency, or reliability of goods movement into, out of, or within a port, she said.

Investments in port transportation infrastructure will be awarded on a competitive basis for projects located either within the boundary of a coastal seaport, or outside the boundary of a coastal seaport, and directly relate to port operations or to an intermodal connection to a port.

The department will evaluate projects using criteria which include leveraging federal funds, project costs and benefits, project outcomes, project readiness, and domestic preference. The department will also consider geographic diversity when selecting grant recipients.

[200619.ID.BIZ] Pelindo III Segera Terapkan Gate In Online di Pelabuhan Tanjung Perak

KONTAN.CO.ID - JAKARTA.
