[301015.EN.SEA] Maersk Lays-up Giant Triple-E Box Ship In Winter Cutback

DANISH Maersk Lines has mothballed one of its giant Triple- E 18,000 TEU vessel for at least six weeks due to the 2M alliance's blanked sailings programme between Asia and Europe, the Loadstar reported.

The laying-up of the vessel follows the move last week by the carrier's parent to issue a profit warning due to an unexpected US$600 million shortfall in the container line's full-year profit forecast, which it blamed on a "significant drop in rates".

The cutback in services during the winter slack season will result in the total capacity of laid-up vessels breaching the 1 million TEU mark, the highest level since the financial crisis began, according to Alphaliner.

Its latest data shows 263 idled containerships, totalling 934,700 TEU and representing 4.7 per cent of the total global fleet. This includes 23 ships with a capacity of 7,500 TEU or more.

The laying-up of a Triple-E demonstrates how serious the oversupply situation has become on the tradelane, Alphaliner said, adding that carriers normally endeavour to keep their largest ships and most expensive assets active.

It suggests that, given the current market conditions affecting all trade sectors, Maersk was left with no choice but to consign the Triple-E to lay-up, the report said.

Maersk Line is understood to be working on further service cuts to its network to mitigate the collapse of freight rates on the Asia-Europe route, from which it derives 40 per cent of its business, and is expected to be announced ahead of its third-quarter results due out on November 6.

Maersk Group chief executive Nils Andersen has indicated during a recent analysts call to give a "more detailed" response to the dramatic downturn. He also confirmed that for surplus vessels there was no other option than to return ships to owners at the end of time charters, and for owned tonnage to enter lay-up in the interim.

The crisis plaguing container liner services has also hit the charter market very hard across all sizes of ships.

"Disillusion is besetting the charter market as more size segments are affected by the current slump in demand, while oversupply becomes a chronic ailment," said Alphaliner.

The long-suffering panamax market had witnessed a "substantial increase in the supply of spot tonnage" in recent weeks, against a background of receding demand, said the consultant.

[291015.EN.SEA] Colombo Emerges As South Asia's Next Major Transshipment Port

SRI Lanka's port of Colombo has emerged as a growing transshipment hub capable of handling the increasing number of mega-ships that have become the workhorses of the Asia-Europe trade.

Colombo International Container Terminals (CICT) became a major player in September when CMA CGM Marco Polo - until 2013 the world's largest container ship with a capacity of 16,020 TEU - arrived at the facility, shaking off years of miniscule container growth.

The 2.4-million-TEU deep-sea terminal is a joint venture between China Merchants Holdings International and the Sri Lanka Ports Authority, and the rise of major shipping alliances, or more integrated and expansive vessel-sharing agreements, has boosted traffic at Colombo and other Asia transshipment hubs.

Those hubs are benefiting from the inability of other nations on the Indian subcontinent to handle vessels with capacities of 10,000 TEU and up - and the massive volumes they discharge into the hinterland, the IHS Media reported.

Colombo, particularly, has reaped the benefits of being at the nexus of the South Asia trade, a position that forces it to balance relations with India, its much larger neighbour, while still benefiting from terminal investment and trade fuelled by China, Asia's other heavy hitter.

CICT's increase in volume has been staggering. In 2014, its first full year of operation, the terminal handled slightly more than 686,600 TEU and expects to double that this year to about 1.3 million TEU. Colombo, consisting of three container terminals, is expected to boost volume 5 to 10 per cent this year over 2014, Upul Jayatissa, chief manager of marketing and business development, said.

Total box volume in Colombo container volume grew 14 per cent year over year in 2014 to 4.9 million TEU, elevating Colombo three spots, to 30th, on The Journal of Commerce's ranking of global container ports.

In the prior four years, Colombo had a compound annual growth rate of 1 per cent. Transshipment cargo to and from India, east Africa and Bangladesh accounts for approximately 70 per cent of the port's volume, according to the Asian Development Bank. The remaining 30 per cent is local traffic, driven by garment, tea and rubber exports, and consumer products, and industrial and agricultural equipment imports.

The port has an annual capacity of 7.4 million TEU, but the addition of two new planned terminals, each with annual capacities of 2.4 million TEU, in the South Harbour, where CITC is located, would bring its capacity to 12.2 million TEU. Another 1 million TEU of capacity or so could be squeezed out by maximizing the terminals, estimates Rohan Masakorala, CEO of Shippers' Academy Colombo, a school of business for global commerce and logistics. Another 800,000 TEU of capacity will be added in 2016, when the US$500 million East Terminal comes online.

The terminal's 59-foot draft and cranes with a 230-foot outreach allow it to handle the largest container vessels in service, giving the port a chance to stay competitive in a transshipment market plied by increasingly larger vessels. Fourteen services using mega-ships call CICT weekly, providing about 65 per cent of the volume, with feeder traffic providing the rest.

The terminal receives more than 100 ship calls a month, with the 2M Alliance of Maersk Line and MSC, the two largest global carriers, driving the most volume. Singapore-based Pacific International Lines is the second-largest user of the terminal, followed by the CKYHE and G6 alliances.

The Asian Development Bank, which gave a $300 million loan to Colombo for harbour improvements, is optimistic about the port's potential, noting most ports in South Asia face congestion.

Demand for Colombo transshipment appears to be growing in India. The volume of transshipped goods moving through Colombo for India's major public ports nearly doubled from 652,000 TEU in the fiscal year ending March 31, 2014, to nearly 1.2 million during fiscal 2014-15, according to statistics obtained from India's Ministry of Shipping. Total foreign transshipped volume through India's major ports soared 34 per cent to 2.5 million TEU in the same period.

Colombo commanded the largest share of India's foreign transshipment volume in the latest fiscal year, accounting for 48 per cent of all traffic, according to ministry statistics. Singapore was the second-largest gateway for foreign transshipped cargo to India, with a 22 per cent share, and Port Klang, Malaysia, was third, with a 10 per cent share.

CICT also handled 220,000 TEU moving to and from Bangladesh this year, up 40 per cent from 2014. Of the 1.6 million oceangoing TEU moving through Bangladesh annually, CICT aims to add 800,000 over the next two years.

[291015.ID.BIZ] Harga Batu Bara Jeblok, United Tractors Tak Bisa Berharap Besar Pada Penjualan Alat Berat

Bisnis.com, JAKARTA -- PT United Tractors Tbk. (UNTR) tak bisa berharap besar pada penjualan alat berat selama harga batu bara masih jeblok.

Analis PT Reliance Securities Tbk.

[281015.EN.BIZ] Authorities Plan To Expand Incheon Port To Handle Bigger Ships With New Terminals

THE Incheon Port Authority is continuing to invest in facilities to handle larger containerships to lower costs for shippers and become a regional hub.

The effort is coupled with plans to construct an extra terminal by early 2016 that is to be managed by Hanjin Shipping, IHS media reports.

The project will expand the New Port to one million square feet and one mile, respectively, as part of the first phase of the authority's 'New Port development plan.

The second phase of the development plan calls for the addition of six more berths by 2020. A high-tech container terminal with a two-mile quay and 23 million square foot area for stacking.

This facility is to be built and the existing depth alongside of 46 feet will be deepened to at least 52 feet by 2018 to accommodate 13,000-TEU vessels.

"The port aims to keep up with the recent trend of mega-carriers and the increasing traffic volume from China and other developing countries," IPA's president Yoo Chang-keun was quoted as saying.

"Acquiring better infrastructure contributes to the economy as it improves the price competitiveness of Korean products by providing consignees and shippers in the metropolitan area with a more efficient logistics channel that saves time and cost," he said.

"Ultimately, the developments will make the port a logistics and tourist hub in the northeast Asia and contribute to national competitiveness."

At present Incheon New Port can dock 8,000-TEU ships with its five rail-mounted quay cranes with reaches of 22 rows, and 14 automated gantry cranes of five tiers and nine rows at the Sunkwang New Container Terminal.

Mr Yoo said he remained cautious about the frenetic activity among the shipping companies competing for mega-ship orders. "The expansion of port infrastructure should not reckless, but must be carefully decided," he said.

[281015.ID.BIIZ] Pengusaha Logistik Tak Puas Program Tol Laut

JAKARTA.

Sofyan Djalil, Menteri Perencanaan Pembangunan Nasional mengatakan, walau belum kelihatan hasilnya, program tol laut tetap dilaksanakan pemerintah.

[271015.EN.SEA] Maersk Cuts Profit Forecast By US$600m As Global Trade Weakens

DENMARK's Maersk Group, which runs the world's biggest container shipping liner, has downgraded its full-year outlook for underlying profit by US$600 million to about $3.4 billion billion due to the deterioration in the container shipping market.

In a company statement, the Copenhagen-based container shipping company said: "The container shipping market deteriorated beyond the Group's expectations and does not expect market recovery in 2015."

It also explained that the previous expectation, as announced in the Q2 report, was based on an underlying result contribution from Maersk Line above $2.2 billion.

"The Group now expects an underlying result from Maersk Line of around $1.6 billion especially in the latter part of the third quarter and October."

The group's chief executive, Nils Andersen, said Mærsk Line had taken steps in recent years to ensure a "cost-effective and resilient operation" but the weak container shipping market was taking its toll.

Maersk Line's average freight rates were 19 percent lower in the third quarter versus the same period a year earlier, the company said. The shipping line also carried fewer containers than it had expected as shipments only rose 1.1 percent.

The company statement pointed out that in Q3 Maersk Line achieved an average freight rate of $2,163 per FEU ($2,679 per FEU in Q3 2014) and carried 2.427 million FEU (2.401 million FEU in Q3 2014) which were lower than expected.

Analysts said the profit downgrade had been larger than expected, according to media reports.

Sydbank analyst Jacob Pedersen was cited in Reuters saying that: "Mærsk Line has been hit harder than expected by low capacity utilisation due to the low volume growth in the global container transportation market."

[271015.ID.BIZ] INSA: Tanjung Perak Pusat Arus Logistik Nasional

[261015.EN.AIR] Asia's Air Cargo Markets Weaken In The Third Quarter

AIR cargo carrier's in Asia saw demand fall by 1.1 per cent year on year during the third quarter, after registering a 4.5 per cent increase during the first half of the year, according to the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines (AAPA).

As a result, air cargo growth for the first nine months narrowed to 2.6 per cent compared to the same period last year.

The International Air Transport Association's cargo results for September have not yet been released, but its latest business confidence survey of airline chief financial officers and heads of cargo found that the declining trend of the third quarter was expected to continue, reported IHS Media.

The IATA survey said: "The growth outlook is positive for both passenger and cargo businesses, but not at the strong pace that was expected earlier in the year. This likely reflects concerns over weakness in the global business environment and emerging market economies."

This was in line with the AAPA outlook. "The operating environment for Asian airlines remains challenging, complicated by the effects of slowing economic growth in emerging markets, and associated exchange rate volatility," AAPA director general Andrew Herdman was quoted as saying.

"Overall, Asia Pacific airlines' profitability is showing modest improvement in an intensely competitive market."

According to the AAPA, demand in freight tonne kilometre (FTK) terms in September barely matched the same month last year. After accounting for a 2.3 per cent increase in offered freight capacity, the average international freight load factor declined by 1.5 percentage points to 62.7 per cent for the month.

Air freight volume at Hong Kong International Airport increased by just one per cent in September compared to the same month last year to a total of 368,000 tonnes of cargo.

The growth, although weak, reversed a trend of decreasing year-over-year growth at the airport and was generated by a 3 per cent increase in cargo exports to North America and Australasia during the month.

Cathay Pacific general manager cargo sales Mark Sutch said demand in the cargo markets began to climb moving into September, but it was more of a trickle than a surge.

Shanghai Pudong International Airport Cargo Terminals Co. Ltd recorded cargo throughput of 136,000 tonnes, an increase of 1.3 per cent and well short of the double-digit growth percentages posted earlier this year.

Shanghai Pudong handled 1.17 million tonnes in the first nine months of the year, up 8.5 per cent year on year.

Ketergantungannya dalam pola trade-nya, b to b nya, katanya.

Sebelumnya, pemerintah berjanji bakal memberikan perhatian secara spesifik pada pusat logistik nasional mengingat rendahnya peran pusat logistik Indonesia dibandingkan dengan Singapura. Menteri Keuangan Bambang P.S. Brodjonegoro menyatakan pusat logistik di Asean seharusnya berada di Indonesia dimana memiliki permintaan terbesar.

[201015.EN.SEA] Family of Drowned El Faro Crewman Sues For US$100 Million

THE family of a ship's cook lost aboard El Faro cargo ship is seeking US$100 million in a negligence and wrongful death suit against the owners and captain.

The crewman was thrown over board during a hurricane that sunk his ship off the Bahamas recently.

The lawsuit on behalf of the estate of Lonnie Jordan, one of the 33 crew members presumed dead, was filed in Jacksonville, against Tote Services and Tote Maritime Puerto Rico, as well as the El Faro captain, Reuters reports.

Mr Jordan, 33, of Jacksonville, worked on the 1,200-TEU ship for 13 years as a cook, his family told the Jacksonville Times-Union.

"Tote Services, negligently permitted the El Faro to sail out to sea despite being in an unseaworthy condition to handle the conditions of a violent storm," the lawsuit states.

Flamboyant personal injury lawyer Willie Gary flanked by relatives of other crew members, told reporters outside the Duval County courthouse that "the ship should have never left dock".

Mr Gary said he would be seeking the ship maintenance records and had heard that it was undergoing mechanical repairs the day it departed as well as having other problems within weeks of the doomed voyage.

More lawsuits will follow on behalf of the other relatives, warned Mr Gary, who has taken on major corporations such as Walt Disney and Anheuser-Busch in the past.

John AC Cartner, lawyer and legal commentor, cited in New York's Maritime Advocate, had earlier said: “There wouldn’t have been a riding crew out there doing engine work if she hadn’t had engine problems before. She was an old ship, an old steam ship, and old steam ships often have riding crews going along to fix things."

But Mr Cartner has since withdrawn the statement having learnt that the riding crew was not there to repair but to prepare the ship for another role.

“In preparation for transferring to the west coast, contractors on board were carrying out preparation work, such as running electrical cable for modifications to meet the cargo needs for that trade. These modifications had no association with the integrity or propulsion of the vessel," he conceded.

“Padahal kami tinggal bayar saja,” terang Agus.

[191015.EN.SEA] Megaships Not True Cause Of Port Congestion, TPM Conference Told

BLAMING megaship cargo surges for port congestion is wrong because there are not enough them in the Asia-Pacific today to make a difference, said an expert.

"Megaships are not the major part of the problem, though vessel size may become a problem in the coming years," said Andy Lane, a Singapore consultant, who did a study of phenomenon.

Mr Lane told the TPM Asia Shipping Conference in Shenzhen that he found that out of 49,000 calls to 27 major Asian ports in 2014, only 12 per cent of vessels were above 10,000 TEU and that larger ships accounted for 22 per cent of total volume.

"Severe peaks existed long before ships exceeded 10,000 TEU in capacity," said Mr Lane, a partner with Singapore-based CTI Consult.

"While this can create temporary congestion, it is the paradigms of weekly manufacturing cycles and week closing that need to be challenged and changed," he said.

Also, the "sub-optimisation of terminal assets" was a more readily identifiable culprit responsible for port congestion - a point taken by other speakers are the conference that drew 600 delegates, said organisers.

Analysis of IHS data on quay crane use at the world's 12 largest ports showed usage rates averaging 48 per cent.

"If these ports were to raise that to 60 per cent, it would increase average crane usage from 28 to 32 moves per hour and provide 44 per cent extra capacity," said Mr Lane.

"Given cranes cost in the region of US$10 million each, this would result in a very large increase in return on investment for that capital equipment, to a value of more than $1 billion a year," he said.

End-of-week peak in shipments and its ripple effects are another factor. Ships gather in east and south China at the same time in order to meet weekend closing schedules, he said.

Because ships sail at similar speeds, they arrive in bunches and this spreads to feeder ports, as well as onwards to US and European ports.

[181015.EN.SEA] Iran's Big fleet Expansion Will Be Funded By Sanction-Seized Cash

IRAN has revealed a massive fleet expansion plan it says will help prepare it for an immediate return to the shipping industry after the US-led sanctions are lifted, reports News.Az of Azerbaijan.

Mohammad Saeidi, the head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL), said plans call for the purchase of 579,000 TEU of shipping, two million deadweight tons of dry bulkers and 1.6 million tons of tankers.

Mr Saeidi said this fleet will be operational by 2020 and enabling funds will be provided by petrodollars that have been frozen in international banks and are expected to be released once the sanctions are lifted.

He said the IRISL is also discussing the possibility of alliances as part of the planned expansion strategy.

Mr Saeidi said talks are underway with the Shipping Corporation of India regarding the revival of their 38-year-old Irano-Hind joint venture that ended in 2013 due to sanctions on trade.

He said a series of major newbuilding contracts will be signed in a matter of weeks as Iran taps significant funds built up in China, South Korea, Japan and India through trading during sanctions, Lloyd's List reported.

Iran will use these funds to place newbuilding orders, predominantly in China, where Mr Saeidi said existing relationships with China and Chinese banks will allow IRISL to place favourable orders at Chinese yards.

South Korean yards are also under consideration as are some secondhand purchases, but the initial focus will be newbuildings in China.

Elsewhere in his remarks, the IRISL chief said his company will be ordering panamax vessels as well 14,000-TEU and 18,000-TEU vessels to take on the top players.

Mr Saeidi said that vessels with a tonnage of 10,000 TEU are more likely to be the target, but he also suggested that final decisions will be made in the coming weeks.

[161015.EN.BIZ] By 2020, US East Coast Will Equal West Coast in Asia Imports: Zim Chief

BY 2020, Israeli flag carrier Zim reckons that there will be a gradual shift of US imports from the US west coast to the east coast to a point where the proportions will be 50:50, said Zim president and CEO at a Shenzhen shipping conference.

"This will not mean a reduction in west coast volume. A five per cent annual growth in container shipping worldwide will mean that there will be no loss in west coast volume," he said.

Mr Danieli said there had been a 10 per cent transfer of cargo from the US west coast to the east coast during the protracted labour dispute with the Pacific coast dockers union.

"Much of it moved back, but not all," he said. "The east coast had 20 per cent of Asian imports and the west coast had 67 per cent in 2014, but now it has 62 per cent," he said.

Mr Danieli said the key accelerator of the west to east coast import shift will be the opening of the widened Panana Canal and increasing use of the Suez Canal to reach the US east coast and its consumer-rich hinterland.

Another factor encouraging the Asia-Suez US east coast is the shift of manufacturing from China, which has priced itself out of the market for low-end footwear and apparel to more affordable Vietnam, he said.

This trend encourages greater use of Suez. "Yes, transit times are longer, but costs are lower. It depends on the commodity which is more important - and cost is more important than transit in shipping low value cargo which Vietnam produces.

The shift of such production to Indonesia and the India subcontinent is further encouragement for use of the Suez Canal to reach the North American market as it adds volume to the trade flow.

Mr Danieli raised the familiar argument about consumer density being high east of the Mississippi Valley served better by landing cargo on the east coast.

He took the opportunity to introduce Zim's 7 Star Express, which will involved a string from south China, tapping into transshipments from the Indo China and the Indian subcontinent via Colombo.

"The 7 Star Express will go through Suez and the Mediterranean without stopping and on to New York - providing the fast transit times in the market," said Mr Danieli.

Asked from the floor of the TMP Asia conference, why the Zim order book had nothing more than 13,000-TEU, he said that the company had decided not to be a player in the Asia-Europe trade where ships larger than 13,000-TEU would find employment.

Mr Danieli said that the company was dedicated to the North American trade where larger ships would play no useful role until various dredging and bridge raising projects were complete.
