[071020.EN.SEA] Iran's Shipping Revenue Surpasses US$770 Million a Year

 

THE Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (IRISL) earned US$778 million throughout the year until June 20, reports Iranian newsite Eghtesad Online.

The report comes after Iran's top shipping company transported 23 million tonnes of cargo over the period, despite facing US sanctions and a Covid outbreak.

Khazar Sea Shipping Lines, transported 1.7 million tonnes of cargo, Bulk Carrier Company accounted for 60 billion tonnes, and Container Transportation Company transported 626,000 TEU throughout this period.

The IRISL Multimodal Transportation Company managed 977,000 tons of bulk goods and 2,183 TEU. It held 20 per cent of transportation handled by all Iranian major ports during the period, and a 19 per cent share in the southern ports' market and 27 per cent of northern ports' market.

The company acquired 303,000 tonnes of low-sulphur fuel for use by ships worth $145 million during the period.

IRISL ranked 14th in Alphaliner's rankings of leading carriers in 2019, with a consolidated capacity of more than 150,000 TEU.

Meanwhile, Iran's 21 major commercial ports handled a total of 48.42 million tonnes of commodities from March 20 to August 21 to register a 26.5 per cent decline compared to last year.

Non-oil goods valued for more than 30.98 million tonnes of the total throughput, showing a 33.9 per cent fall. The rest were oil products, showing an 8.24 per cent decline year on year.

Container loading and unloading decreased 40.24 per cent at 531,650 TEU.

A total of 21.15 million tonnes of commodities were exported from these ports and over 12.47 million tonnes was imported, displaying a 31.83 per cent and 9.16 per cent decline respectively.

More than 1.21 million tonnes of goods was through these ports during the same period, indicating a 44.73 per cent decrease.

More than 139.65 million tonnes of commodities were loaded and unloaded at the ports, with a rise of 0.17 per cent.

Non-oil goods valued for more than 95.48 MT of the total throughput, showing a 0.08 per cent growth. The remaining 44.16 MT was oil products, showing a 0.7 per cent increase.

A total of 23.11 million tonnes of commodities were loaded and unloaded in Hormozgan Province's Shahid Rajaee Port from March 20 to August 21, demonstrating a 27.26 per cent drop.

These numbers made Shahid Rajaee India's busiest port during the period. Non-oil goods accounted for around 13.78 million tonnes and oil products more than 11.77 million tonnes of the total, showing a 35.15 per cent decline and an 11.87 per cent increase.

Shahid Rajaee Port has a six per cent share in the region's total container throughput per annum.

Meanwhile, Imam Khomeini Port was the second busiest port during the five-month period, handling more than 14.97 million tonnes of commodities, with a 19.83 per cent decrease.

Imam Khomeini port has 40 wharfs and 140 km of railroad within its premises. Last year saw 3 million tonnes of goods transported from the port with 53,000 wagons. Close to 90 per cent of Iran's demand for livestock feed raw material and 79 per cent of grains are imported from this port.

Non-oil goods accounted for 10.59 MT and oil products for close to 4.38 million tonnes of the total throughput at Imam Khomeini Port, registering a 12.61 per cent and 33.18 per cent drop.

Qeshm Port was next on the list with a total of 2.06 tons of goods loaded and unloaded there, showing a 32.32 per cent downfall.

Non-oil goods accounted for more than 2.01 million tonnes and oil products for 48,590 tons of the total throughput in Qeshm Port, showing a 32.52 per cent and 23.28 per cent decrease respectively.
