[120421.EN.BIZ] Algeciras Consolidates Agri-food Exports to North America

SPAIN's Port of Algeciras has become a key harbour for agri-food products to supply North America, reports the Fresh Plaza Netherlands food news service.

Competitive transit times are conducive to the shipment of fresh produce, such as citrus, stone fruit, garlic, and peppers, as well as strawberries, which can now be exported to the Canadian market.

APM Terminals Algeciras and TTI Algeciras facilitate the landing of Andalusian produce in New York in seven days, in Miami or Montreal in 10 days, and in Savannah in 11 days.

Thanks to the 12 regular and direct services that connect the United States and Canada with the two container terminals of the Cadiz Port of Algeciras, this trade has prospered.

Packaged olive oil continues to be the most exported product to North America, with more than 11,400 TEU, and a 48 per cent and 423 per cent increase in exports to the United States and Canada.

In fact, the Port Authority has managed to increase exports to the United States by eight per cent in 2020, avoiding the commercial impediments imposed by the US Government.

The Port of Algeciras has announced that it will add an esplanade for the traffic of the Strait, which has been generated after the demolition of a part of the Lonja building last summer. The initiative has a bid amount of EUR695,000 (US$830,959).
