[100811.EN.LOG] Vancouver Restricts Trucks To Major Roads And Highways To Cut Pollution

THE Port of Vancouver has announced a Truck Traffic Pilot Programme that will confine trucks major highways as authorised routes in the city to cut noise and pollution that may arouse citizen complaints.

During the 90-day pilot period from August 25, the City of Vancouver and the port will monitor traffic on Nanaimo Street, to determine the effectiveness of the programme, reported JOC Sailings, formerly Canadian Sailings.

"Port Metro Vancouver understands the need to work with communities that may be impacted by port operations," said port chief operating officer Chris Badger. "Together with the city, and with the cooperation of the trucking community, we are confident this pilot programme will have a positive effect and reduce the impact of container truck operations on residents of Vancouver."

Port and city officials will evaluate the initiative upon the conclusion of the pilot programme to determine whether the changes will be made permanent.
