[210313.EN.SEA] FMC To Allow G6 Shipping Lines To Open Asia-US East Coast Services

THE US Federal Maritime Commission (FMC) has voted to allow the Asia-Europe G6 Alliance carriers to operate between Asia and the US east coast via Panama or Suez.

The G6, which includes APL, Hyundai, MOL Hapag-Lloyd, NYK, and OOCL, filed an agreement with the FMC that would allow them to charter and exchange space on each other's vessels and coordinate and cooperate with respect to services and operations, but not between Asia and the US west coast.

Federal Maritime Commissioner William Doyle noted the G6 Alliance will deploy more than 50 ships in the transpacific trade, with three strings through the Panama Canal and three through the Suez Canal to begin in May.

Mr Doyle said services will "call at almost 30 ports in Asia, North America east coast, Canada, Central America, Caribbean, Indian subcontinent, Mediterranean, and the Middle East."

Mr Doyle said under the agreement six US-flag vessels from APL are to be retained in the rotation and to provide an increase in frequency of port calls on the US east coast.
