SINGAPORE's APL, now a unit of French shipping giant CMA CGM, announced that its Gulf Asia Express 2 (GA2) service will soon be calling at the Port of Umm Qasr in an effort to continuously provide market connectivity between the Far East and Middle East.

Hong Kong's Orient Overseas Container Line (OOCL), also announced direct calls to the Port of Umm Qasr in its Middle East Service 4 (ME4) service, starting on August 6 with the first sailing in Shanghai.

A statement from the company said that "with the market reach and connections that the Umm Qasr port can provide, the ME4 service will improve our overall suite of Asia-Middle East products with competitive connections and a more comprehensive service network to the Middle East for customers."

The new ME4 port rotation will be as follows: Shanghai, Ningbo, Taipei, Shekou, Tanjung Pelepas, Port Kelang, Jebel Ali, Umm Qasr, Jebel Ali, Port Kelang, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

APL said its service will also make a second call to Jebel Ali during the return leg of its service rotation to Asia.

"The enhanced GA2 service is primed to offer Asian shippers direct access to the Umm Qasr port in Iraq which is only accessible through feeder services via Jebel Ali currently. With the addition of Jebel Ali to its Middle East - Asia lap, the GA2 service will offer shippers with the best in class transit time for export cargo from Jebel Ali to the Far East," said APL in a statement.

The improved GA2 service will start on August 6 with the first sailing from Shanghai with the following port rotation: Shanghai, Ningbo, Taipei, Shenzhen-Shekou, Tanjung Pelepas, Port Klang, Jebel Ali, Umm Qasr, Jebel Ali, Port Klang, Hong Kong and Shanghai.
