[250911.EN.SEA] 'Governments Failed To Protect Shipping' Against Piracy

London: UK-based International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) criticised governments of the world for failing to protect shipping from pirates despite regular talks of maritime security over the past 10 years.

“The truth about governments' failure, and the terrible suffering endured by captured seafarers, might be unpalatable to many politicians,” said Spyros M Polemis, chairman of ICS.

The shipping organisation expects the frequency of pirate attacks against shipping to escalate “dramatically” once the monsoon season is over.

“The current military response - with only a handful of navy ships available to provide protection on any given day - has just been a sticking plaster on a gaping wound. We have still not yet seen the political will from governments needed to develop a comprehensive military strategy that will have a decisive impact,” Polemis said.

The ICS board on Tuesday reviewed the continuing piracy crisis in the Indian Ocean where over 3,000 seafarers have been kidnapped for ransom by Somali pirates since three years ago.
