[130613.EN.SEA] Starved Zeebrugge ZIP Terminal Gets First Mainline Call In Two Years

THE Zeebrugge International Port (ZIP) terminal, one of three deepsea container terminals in the harbour, and the victim of northern European overcapacity, has secured its first mainline service after being essentially idle for the last two years.

The Far East-North Europe CEM/ANN service operated by Evergreen and Hanjin, will add a Zeebrugge call from July. It will be the final northern range call of the revised CEM/ANN rotation and it will be handled at the PSA-operated ZIP terminal. The first call is scheduled on 19 July by the 8,452 TEU Ever Laden, according to Alphaliner.

The first phase of the ZIP terminal was opened in early 2011, but the terminal has struggled to attract customers. Despite being ULCS-ready with a 16.5 metre draft and four gantry cranes with a 24-row outreach, the terminal had been mostly idle and was only able to attract minor feeder services.

ZIP had fallen victim of the general overcapacity in Northern Europe's port sector, with overall volumes at Zeebrugge falling from a peak of 2.50 million TEU in 2010 to only 1.95 million TEU in 2012, as volumes have also dropped at Zeebrugge's APMT terminal, as well as PSA's CHZ Terminal.
